この郷は、鳥羽市の木「やまとたちばな」を中心に栽培しています。 橘は日本古来より大切にされてきた聖木で「日本書記」「古事記」や「万葉集」では「非時香果（ときじくのかぐのこのみ）」つまり、永遠に香っている果実と表現されていました。「古事記」によると垂仁天皇の勅命により田道間守（たじまもり）が常世国から永遠に香る果実を持ち帰ったと記されています。常緑果樹である「やまとたちばな」は永久不変、不老不死、若返りなどと結び付け、「常世国」は理想郷とされてきました。「とこよの郷」はこれらの言い伝えから引用させていただきました。
