In this piece, the organic growth takes shape in the forming as a tropical island, with its round lushness reflecting down over the crisp water. It was created in multi medium includes acrylic, enamel, and spray paint, and is an ode to the tropical vibes of Japanese City Pop albums and southern California from the 1980’s.

Michael & Eva Jacobson ‘Retro Organics’

- Retro Organics, 2024, Punch needle on acrylic painted canvas, 24” x 24”
- This piece is a collaboration piece with my wife, Eva Jacobson. We are evolving an existing abstract painting and re-creating it with a new medium. Producing the piece stitch by stitch with punch needle brings a softer more approachable feel, and allows the form to grow out of the canvas. Colors and shapes from 1960’s – 1970’s design complement the soft textured look to give the work a clean, organic, retro esthetic.

Michael Jacobson ‘Grimace’ Bio

Grimace is a New York-based artist who combines elements of Graffiti, futurism, retro design, the
natural world, along with indigenous art influences taken in from his world travels to make up his
current body of work.
Grimace works in mixed mediums ranging from spray paint to acrylics and collage. As the work has
evolved, abstract forms have overtaken traditional graffiti letter formations to become living, breathing,
organic Life Forms, growing to become live characters of their own. These forms speak to themes of
organic growth using natural and indigenous influenced retro colors and shapes.
Recent works have taken Grimace’s work into the 3D form, and have included sculptures and knitted
needlepoint works depicting Grimace’s growing ‘Organic Lifeforms’.
Currently, Grimace produces both private commission work as well as for galleries and public artworks
that can be viewed in New York and around the world. Recent notable projects include painting
multiple commission projects in The World Trade Center, including a painting the interior and exterior of
a replica subway train on the 69th floor (now Spotify’s Headquarters), painting a 75 foot-long ‘retro
pinball-themed’ mural in The Equitable Building, painting the “Art Boat” ferry docked on 23rd St. on the
East River, and having multiple murals featured during Brooklyn Atlantic Art Walk. Grimace was also
recently awarded a City Artist Corps Grant in 2022 where he collaborated on a large scale mural in a
Brooklyn community garden. Recently, in summer 2024, Grimace painted a custom mural and was
featured in the ‘6 Pack of Black’ exhibition at Platano Press in Tokyo, Japan.

Grimaceはニューヨークを拠点に活動するアーティストで、グラフィティ、フューチャリズム、レトロデザイン、自然界の要素に加え、世界中を旅して得た土着アートの影響を融合させ、現在の作品群を作り上げている。

Grimaceはスプレーペイントからアクリル、コラージュまで、様々なメディウムをミックスして制作している。作品が進化するにつれ、抽象的なフィルムは伝統的なグラフィティの文字の形を追い越し、生きて呼吸する有機的なライフ・フォームとなり、それ自体が生きたキャラクターとして成長している。これらのフォルムは、自然や土着の影響を受けたレトロな色や形を使い、有機的な成長のテーマを語っている。

最近の作品では、Grimaceの作品を立体化し、Grimaceが成長する「有機生命体」を描いた彫刻やニット・ニードルポイント作品を発表している。

現在、Grimaceは個人的なコミッションワークだけでなく、ニューヨークをはじめ世界中で鑑賞できるギャラリーやパブリックアート作品の制作も手掛けている。最近の主なプロジェクトには、ワールド・トレード・センターの69階（現在はスポティファイ本社）にある地下鉄のレプリカの内装と外層のペイントを含む複数のコミッション・プロジェクト、イクイタブル・ビルディングの75フィートのレトロ・ピンボールをテーマにした壁画、イースト・リバーの23丁目に停泊するフェリー「アート・ボート」のペイント、ブルックリン・アトランティック・アート・ウォークで紹介された複数の壁画などがある。Grimaceはまた、2022年にシティ・アーティスト・コープの助成金を授与され、ブルックリンのコミュニティ・ガーデンに大規模な壁画を共同制作した。最近では、2024年夏にGrimaceはカスタムメイドの壁画を描き、東京のプラタノプレスで開催された「6パック・オブ・ブラック」展で紹介された。
