Fotini Vurgaropulou
These pieces are inspired by the sound, tuning, tension and the construction of ancient, exotic musical instruments. This series consists of mulitple glass castings and kilnformed glass pieces, which are slumped, overlapped, drilled and assembled with a variety of steel hardware, found objects, mandolin and bouzouki strings that push the limits of these dense, yet fragile materials, further exploring color, friction, the “s”, and the emotionality of music and memory.

Fotini was born in Greece and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. She received a B.F.A. in Sculpture from RISD and an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Parsons School of Design. She lives and works in NYC as an artist. From 1992-94, Fotini curated and directed Dedicated Space, an alternative exhibition space in Park Slope, Brooklyn. She organized and curated exhibits, performances and studio tours that promoted both emerging and established artists. Fotini exhibits her work regularly, using a variety of media including plaster, cement, wax, glass, resin, found objects and hardware. “この作品は、サウンド、チューニング、弦の張り、古代のエキゾチックな楽器の造形に触発されています。このシリーズは、さまざまな鋼製ハードウェア、発見されたオブジェクト、マンドリン、ブズーキという楽器の弦、オーバーラップ、穴あけ、組み立てられた複数のガラスキャスティングとキルンフォームガラス片で構成されています。高密度で壊れやすい素材の限界を超えた上で、相応しい色を模索しました。摩擦や音楽と記憶の感情を表現しています。”
